Methodology
NetspeedCanada has no affiliations with any mobile phone provider. We use advanced data aggregation and our proprietary database to compare cell phone plans with user priorities in mind.
Our conclusions are based on pricing, data allocation, network capabilities and coverage, and any limitations or advantages inherent in the plans we analyze. At the same time, we access public forums to examine questions like service reliability and customer service track record.
Limitations exist. While every attempt to cover your cell phone plan selection criteria has been made, we advise you to conduct your own research using our online tool.
Before committing to your selection, be sure to confirm questions like coverage with your shortlisted providers – especially if you live in or frequently visit remote areas.
Cell Phone Carrier Network Coverage in Quebec
Your choice of cell phone provider is simplified thanks to the fact that almost all the infrastructure comes from Telus, Bell, and Rogers. Each of these companies owns several “flanker” brands. For example Telus owns Koodo, so you can expect its network coverage to match that of Telus.
Overall, Telus and Bell have the widest network coverage in Quebec. Quebecor, owner of Videotron, remains independent, but it uses “partner networks” for coverage, allowing it to offer service through most of Quebec.
Check network coverage before choosing a plan, especially if you live or work outside of major centres. Dead spots where there is no signal are rare, but they do occur.
The Difference Between Postpaid and Prepaid Plans
It’s not just a matter of when you pay. That’s in the name. Prepaid plans are paid in advance, and postpaid plans are paid after using the service. The most significant difference, however, is what occurs when you’ve used up your data allowance.
If you have a prepaid plan, you buy more data, which usually expires if you don’t use it. If you have a postpaid plan with data limits, your extra data use is added to your bill.
Most postpaid plans require a contract, and regardless of whether they do or not, they ordinarily require a credit check process. As a result, many people prefer to avoid the hassle and choose prepaid plans instead.
How to Get The Best Cell Phone Deals in Quebec
If you’re buying a device, it’s almost always cheaper to pay cash. Plans including a device don’t give it to you for free: you’re paying it off and there are financing charges.
When choosing plans, shop around. Most providers run special offers from time to time, but don’t just assume they’re cheaper than competing ones. Always do your homework and check the terms and conditions.
If a plan offers lower charges for a limited time, remember that you’ll pay more once the honeymoon period is over and factor that into your price comparisons.
Purchasing a plan online is almost always cheaper than getting it at a physical store. But sometimes, stores offer deals that aren’t available online. Always check.
There’s one hard-and-fast cost saving rule we can state with confidence. Flanker brands are invariably cheaper than flagship brands. For example, Virgin Plus is owned by Telus, but offers cheaper plans.
