Best Internet Providers in Halifax, NS

What Is The Best Home Internet Provider in Halifax?

Bell is the best internet provider in Halifax. Its well-developed infrastructure allows it to offer pure fibre (FTTH) high-speed internet. Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) means you’re directly connected to the fibre network.

Bell’s pricing is not the cheapest available in Halifax. If you’d prefer a more cost-efficient plan, Purple Cow offers lower-priced deals.

Its $60 for 100 Mbps deal is a cable offering, meaning that while downloads are a respectable 100 Mbps, uploads lag behind with a speed of only 10 Mbps.

If you’re looking for a third option, we’d suggest Eastlink. However, its part-fibre plans (FTTN) will be pricey if you take them on a month-to-month basis.

You can compare these ISPs’ home internet plans below.

NetSpeed Canada considers internet plans, pricing, customer support, availability, broadband technology, and the overall value, when recommending internet service providers in Halifax.

When it comes to home internet plans, we also evaluate the download & upload speeds, installation process, contract requirements, unlimited data, user experience, and equipment rental options for each ISP.

To ensure our information is specific to your exact location, we use our proprietary database that has been built in-house by our team. We run regular spot-checks on local addresses in the database to verify ISP service availability.

As with any methodology, there are a few limitations. While we do our best to give you the latest and most accurate information on the speed and pricing of specific ISPs in your area, this data is variable and certain addresses may qualify for different internet services.

Although we generate our data points from the ISPs themselves, we do recommend entering your address into the ISP’s website to find specific plans available in your area.

Our Take on BELL

Our Editor’s choice, Bell, is the biggest internet service provider in Canada. In Halifax, its infrastructure is excellent and its services are widely available.

Bell delivers 100% pure fibre – the fastest and most reliable form of home internet connection.

Its Gigabit Fibe 1.5 costs $130 per month and would be suitable for most users while the Fibe 50 plan, priced at $85 monthly is its cheapest market offering worth considering.

There are some extras to consider, but they come at a price. If you opt for the WiFi 6E Giga hub, you can get it for free – but you’ll pay $60 for it to be installed.

WiFi pods to help you get good WiFi signals all through your home will come at an additional $5 monthly.

The top disadvantage of choosing Bell is that its rapid Gigabit Fibe 3.0 service has very limited availability in Halifax.

Besides this, you can get 1 Gbps download speeds for less from one of the cable providers active in Halifax for less than Bell’s 500 Mbps connection would cost.

However, good news is coming for Halifax residents in 2025. The CRTC has recently opened up access to major fiber networks like Bell, which could make it easier for independent providers to roll out more competitive fiber plans and bring prices down.

That said, it all depends on the wholesale pricing, which will determine how affordable these plans can be. Plus, we’ll have to wait and see if Bell decides to drop their fiber prices to stay competitive.

PURPLE COW INTERNET

Our Take on PURPLE COW INTERNET

Our take on Purple Cow Internet is that it’s the most budget-friendly home internet option available in Halifax.

You can use their services on a month-to-month basis, making it easy for you to change providers if you would like to do so. Installation is usually free, but the company notes that under certain circumstances, charges may be levied. There’s also a once off $55 shipping and packaging fee.

The 30-day trial period gives you time to decide whether you like the service, and if you decide to cancel during the trial period, you’ll get a full refund.

Purple Cow prefers to provide customer service by text message, with mixed reviews on how effective this is. However, it is possible to call them at 1 902 800 2660 and speak to a live operator.

The cheapest plan from Purple Cow on offer in Halifax is its 100 Mbps offering at $60 monthly. However, you should bear in mind that it does not offer fibre. Cable is your only option.

This could soon change, as starting in February 2025, Bell will be opening its fibre infrastructure to independent providers like Purple Cow under the CRTC ruling. We’ll update our database if Purple Cow decides to roll out fibre plans in Halifax.

EASTLINK

Our Take on EASTLINK

Eastlink is an alternative worth considering if you don’t mind the fact that most services are part-fibre. In other words, your home internet is connected to a node via copper cable.

This slows things down somewhat, and upload speeds are not as good as download speeds.

For example, Eastlink’s Fibre Link Internet 1 Gig offers 940 Mbps download speeds. Upload speeds are down-prioritised to 15 Mbps.

The standard cost of this plan is $114.95 monthly, but if you commit to a longer-term contract, this falls to $89.95 per month.

Perks offered include free eeros to boost WiFi signal throughout your home, with no extra charge regardless of the number of Eeros you need.

On the whole, most users seem to agree that Eastlink is fairly reliable, but Bell is faster and Purple Cow offers lower prices.

VMEDIA

Disclaimer: The internet plans are subject to the availability of services at your home address. Pricing is subject to change.

Connection Type

Speed Range

Price Range

Our Take on VMEDIA

VMedia’s 300 Mbps cable plan is priced at $79.95. It’s an Eastlink reseller, so you can expect the same level of reliability and users generally seem satisfied with VMedia’s services.

The company has good service availability in most parts of Halifax based on its claim that it can offer its service to 90 percent of homes in Canada.

The fact that VMedia offers contract-free service with no cancellation fees makes it a low-risk option to try. However, do bear in mind that there’s a $64.95 activation fee.

Extras include mesh Wi-Fi hardware which is available at a monthly rental of $4.50 per eero.

The top drawback of VMedia is that its best packages are cable-based, so upload speeds will be slow. This won’t matter much if you don’t need to upload large files or have good image resolution in video conferencing. However, if you do need good upload speeds, it could prove to be an issue.

DSL plans are available, but in common with all services using this old technology, speeds are poor although reliability is reasonable.

TEKSAVVY

Disclaimer: The internet plans are subject to the availability of services at your home address. Pricing is subject to change.

Price Range

Our Take on TEKSAVVY

The only home internet plan in Halifax from TekSavvy worth considering is its 100 Mbps Unlimited plan priced at $77.95.

This is rather slow compared to what other providers can offer but is the same speed as Purple Cow’s lowest-priced option. It’s also a little more costly. In addition, this is a cable plan, so the upload speed is just 10 Mbps.

Like most other smaller providers, TekSavvy uses last-mile infrastructure from the big Telcos, but despite this, it has gained its share of supporters.

In general, they commend customer service and say they’re satisfied with TekSavvy’s reliability.

At the same time, TekSavvy doesn’t offer a lot of home internet options or faster alternatives in Halifax. It’s budget-friendly but not the cheapest alternative, earning it a 5th place mention.

How Fast Is Halifax Broadband?

You won’t be able to get the same speeds all over Halifax, but most homes will be able to access 1 Gb plans.

Overall average download speeds are in the region of 187.03 Mbps while average upload speeds are 65.6 Mbps. This indicates that many connections are still cable since pure fibre provides equal download and upload speeds.

Bell’s Gigabit Fibe 1.5 is the fastest plan available, and it’s pure fibre. However, it isn’t available everywhere in Halifax, and some households will find that cable remains their best option.

How to Find Home Internet Deals and Promotions in Halifax

From time to time, internet service providers offer specials to attract new customers. They’ll generally be advertised, and you can also check ISP websites to see if there are any current special offers.

Home internet costs can differ depending on your home address. This can work in your favour. For example, if one of the smaller internet service providers is offering a lower-priced service in your building, bigger providers may reduce their pricing.

We’d suggest beginning your search for plans using this website and then taking a closer look at the ones that match your priorities (usually a combination of pricing and speed).

If you’re confident about a particular service, you might get better deals on a contract lasting 12 to 24 months instead of opting for the month-to-month alternative. However, if you decide to switch providers, you’ll have to pay a cancellation fee.

Cancellation fees are usually calculated per month left in your contract, so if you take a 24-month contract and cancel early on, the cost of cancelling your plan might be significant.

Cheap Home Internet Plans in Halifax

The cheapest home internet plans in Halifax come from Purple Cow. Its 100 Mbps package costs $60 per month at current rates.

VMedia takes second place with a 150 Mbps plan at $69.95.

There are slower, cheaper plans for very light use, but with most households enjoying streaming services and using multiple devices, slower plans don’t suit the average user.

Frequently Asked Questions

Based on infrastructure, speed, and reliability, Bell is inarguably the best internet provider in Halifax. It’s certainly the only one currently offering pure fibre, although this is not available in all neighbourhoods..

We recommend the Gigabit Fibe 1.5 with its 1,500 Mbps download and 950 Mbps upload speeds at $130 per month.

For budget-friendliness, Purple Cow remains the top choice with 100 Mbps at $60 monthly. It’s a cable offering so the upload speed is only 10 Mbps, but uploads aren’t a priority for all users.

VMedia and TekSavvy are next on the budget rankings and could be worth looking into. Like Purple Cow, these providers offer Cable services.

Bell offers pure fibre internet in some areas of Halifax. Eastlink offers fibre-to-node, the second-fastest form of fibre.

In this type of fibre connection, the link between your home and the node is copper cable. When searching for a fibre plan, always check whether it is pure fibre or part-fibre.

As we’ve indicated in this article, you can be sure of the fastest options if you choose Bell. You can get a 3 Gbps second full fibre plan in certain buildings.

However, do consider your usage habits to determine what speed is necessary to suit your household’s needs.

For most households, the minimum functional speed will be 100 Mbps.

However, if you are a very light user who only does a little light browsing, and you rarely have more than one or two devices online, you might get away with slower speeds.

Since this doesn’t match the average person’s internet usage, we have not highlighted plans slower than !00 Mbps in this review of Halifax ISPs.

If you want to determine your specific needs, think about what you do online and how many devices are connected at once.

As an example, a person who works from home can get by with 20 Mbps, while HD streaming requires at least 50 Mbps. If multiple devices are being used, each type of use must be factored in.
