Fonus Review (2025) – Plans, Prices, Reviews

This Fonus review is a bit different from the usual because Fonus itself is unlike any other carrier in Canada. Instead of focusing on local or national service, they’ve built a true global plan with unlimited data, calls, and texts in over 100 countries.

In Canada, Fonus works as an MVNO, which means that it doesn’t own towers but connects through Rogers, TELUS, and Bell, usually picking whichever network gives you the best signal.

In my experience, TELUS is the one it defaults to most often, which makes sense since TELUS has some of the best 5G coverage in the country.

Coverage and Network

One of the main perks of Fonus is that it just works wherever you go. In Canada, you’ll see 4G LTE or 5G depending on the tower you’re connected to. Abroad, you can land in the U.S., Europe, or Asia and immediately have service without buying a local SIM or eSIM.

All calls and texts are handled through the Fonus app using VoIP technology. You can even set the app as your default dialer on iOS or Android, so all incoming and outgoing calls automatically route through Fonus instead of your phone’s native calling app.

Local numbers are available from several countries including Canada, the U.S., Mexico, the U.K., Hong Kong, Sweden, and Chile, which makes it easier to stay connected internationally without paying for extra roaming.

The trade-off is that Fonus isn’t a “traditional” carrier. If your data connection is weak, call quality can dip. That’s fine for travel or as a second SIM, but it doesn’t fully replace a standard carrier if you want a seamless setup.

Fonus Plans and Pricing

Fonus keeps things simple with three unlimited data options, and the difference comes down to how much high-speed data you get before speeds are slowed.

The entry-level plan runs about $28/month and includes 5 GB of full-speed data. For around $41/month, you can bump that up to 20 GB at full speed, while the top plan offers true unlimited with no slowdown at all.

All plans include unlimited talk and text through the Fonus app, work in over 100 countries, and are prepaid month-to-month with no contracts. You can also port your number once your account is set up, though it will live inside the Fonus app instead of your phone’s native dialer.

My Take on Fonus

To me, Fonus makes the most sense for frequent travellers or as a second SIM card. Modern phones can run dual SIM, so you could keep a cheap Canadian plan for calls and texts, and then use Fonus for unlimited global data.

As a primary line, I think it’s a stretch. The VoIP-only setup isn’t as smooth as a regular carrier, and customer support can be hit or miss. But if you’ve ever been annoyed by juggling eSIMs when hopping countries, Fonus solves that headache.

Customer Support

Support is all online. Some people say responses are quick and helpful, others say they had to wait longer than expected. There are no physical stores or phone-based help, which is normal for digital-first carriers.

Pros and Cons of Fonus

Pros

  • Unlimited data, calls, and texts in 100+ countries

  • Uses Rogers, TELUS, and Bell in Canada

  • Works on 5G and LTE

  • Month-to-month, cancel anytime

  • Great travel option or second SIM

Cons

  • Calls and texts only work through the Fonus app (VoIP)

  • Customer service reviews are mixed

  • Not the smoothest replacement for a full-time carrier

Fonus Reviews from Other Users

Other users highlight the same things: the convenience of global service and unlimited data is unmatched, especially for people who travel a lot. Many also like that they don’t need to mess with eSIMs in every country.

On the flip side, people mention that using the Fonus app for all calling and messaging feels clunky, and that speeds or call quality can dip in weak coverage areas.

Final Verdict

Fonus is a niche carrier, but if you’re a frequent flyer or digital nomad, it could save you a ton of hassle. Unlimited data in 100+ countries is hard to beat, and using Canadian giants like TELUS, Rogers, and Bell as a backbone means you still get strong coverage at home.

As a daily primary carrier, it’s not perfect. The VoIP setup and mixed support mean it won’t be for everyone. But as a travel SIM or a backup line, Fonus does exactly what it promises: it keeps you connected almost anywhere in the world without surprises.
