Koodo’s 50 GB postpaid plan stands out with a competitive price of $44 per month, offering unlimited talk time and a generous 50 GB of data each month.

You also get to choose a perk. The most valuable of these is undoubtedly the unlimited long-distance pack. It allows you to call people in 27 countries without any extra charges. This could be your top reason for choosing this plan.

Network reliability is equal to that of Telus: no surprises there. Telus owns Koodo.

On the downside, this plan uses a 4G network. However, many users report that it compares well with the speeds achieved using Koodo’s 5G plans.

If the ability to get unlimited talk minutes at a low price tops your list of priorities, the Fizz 20 GB prepaid plan is for you. For only $29 per month (prepaid), you’ll get unlimited talk time plus 20 GB of data.

Didn’t use your data? It will roll over to the next month, a perk few providers offer.

Fizz mobile is owned by Québecor. In Ontario, it uses Rogers Infrastructure and therefore shares the same coverage areas as Rogers.

Public Mobile narrowly wins the race for the best prepaid plan. Its Public 50 GB Prepaid Plan costs $34 per month and it’s not just for people who want unlimited minutes of prepaid talk time.

We see the 50 GB monthly data allocation as generous, and 5G might be an extra motivation to choose it.

Always online, on the go and not keen on using public WiFi networks? This one’s for you. Roger’s 5G Infinite Essential Postpaid 5G plan could be your top choice.

Absolutely everything on this plan is unlimited. Talk to your heart’s content. Stream video on the go without worrying about extra charges. But there are a couple of snags.

The first of these is cost. This plan sets you back $80 per month.

The second is that, though your data is unlimited, you’ll “only” get full 5G speeds on your first 150 GB of data. After that, things slow down. Having said that, 150 GB is a lot of data.

We already discussed our reasons for choosing the $44 50 GB postpaid plan from Koodo as our pick for the best cell phone plan in Ontario. Enough said! It’s a great cell phone plan.

And yes, it is a BYOD plan, which is part of the reason it’s so affordable – no financing on a new device.

In terms of BYOD plans, Virgin is a very close second. Its 60 GB data talk and text plan (postpaid) costs $49 but offers 10 GB more data than Koodo. It’s owned by Bell and uses its network.

But there is another contender. Phone Box’s 75 GB postpaid plan offers a very well-priced alternative at $40. It uses the Rogers and Telus networks and has attracted some surprisingly good reviews.

Freedom Canada – US – Mexico 3 GB

In this category, we have to consider how cheap a plan can be before it stops being of much use. As a result, our picks are Fizz, Public Mobile and Freedom Mobile.

Of these, Freedom Canada-US-Mexico 3 GB is the only postpaid plan and may attract extra billing. With a talk time cap of 120 minutes and only 3 GB of data included, you can almost bet on extra charges over and above the $20 monthly bill.

However, it will be good for people who often travel to the US or Mexico and who use their cell phones sparingly.

Fizz is an easy winner in this category thanks to its Fizz 20 GB prepaid plan with unlimited talk time.

At the same time, we must give the nod to Public Mobile for its Public 1 GB Prepaid plan at $19. Talktime is unlimited and the low data allocation won’t bother those who usually access the internet on WiFi.

When considering prepaid plans, we felt that healthy data allocation was an important consideration.

As a result, our top two places go to Public Mobile’s Public GB 50 prepaid plan and Chatr’s 50 GB prepaid plan. Both cost $34 per month and offer unlimited talk time. Public Mobile gets a slight advantage because of its 5G network capabilities.

We still like Koodo, though. It gets a runner-up spot with its 25 GB prepaid package. It’s a bit slim on the data and works on 4G, but it’s still a very good prepaid cell phone plan.

You want it all, and you don’t mind paying more for the privilege. We picked Rogers for the top spot since it’s the cheapest provider offering unlimited calls and data.

Its 5G Infinite Essential postpaid pan may not be “essential” for absolutely everyone, but at $80 per month, it’s the best price you’ll get for unlimited data and talk.

Your alternatives are Bell’s Ultimate 175 Can-US-Mex postpaid plan and Telus’s 5G+ Canada-US plans. If you’re a frequent traveller to the US, they’ll have the edge over Rogers despite the $100 cost. If you often visit Mexico, then your choice will be Bell.

Unlimited data plans are best for people who often access the internet for work and entertainment while they’re on the move and unable to access WiFI.

Methodology

NetspeedCanada has no affiliations with any mobile phone provider. We use advanced data aggregation and our proprietary database to compare cell phone plans with user priorities in mind.

Our conclusions are based on pricing, data allocation, network capabilities and coverage, and any limitations or advantages inherent in the plans we analyze. At the same time, we access public forums to examine questions like service reliability and customer service track record.

Limitations exist. While every attempt to cover your cell phone plan selection criteria has been made, we advise you to conduct your own research using our online tool.

Before committing to your selection, be sure to confirm questions like coverage with your shortlisted providers – especially if you live in or frequently visit remote areas.

Cell Phone Carrier Network Coverage in Ontario

Bell has the best network coverage in Ontario. However, several Bell subsidiary brands use its infrastructure, including Virgin Plus.

In terms of coverage, Rogers is a very close second to Bell. Bell has 99 percent coverage, and Rogers has 97 percent. When considering Rogers, remember to look at its lower-cost “flanker” brands. They’re owned by Rogers and use its network. Fido and Chatr are both owned by Rogers and share its network coverage.

Telus piggybacks off Bell and has its own network infrastructure. It’s known for the fastest speeds in Ontario, and it benefits from Bell’s network coverage. Its subsidiary brand, Koodo, features in our list of top cell phone plan providers.

The Difference Between Postpaid and Prepaid Plans

Prepaid Plans

Prepaid plans are great for reducing and staying in control of your monthly cell phone bills. Since there is no term contract, they also allow you to switch providers more easily.

You pay in advance, use the service, and if your data runs out, you must consciously make an additional purchase to top up. These purchases often offer a time-limited allocation that will expire if you don’t use it.

Postpaid Plans

Postpaid plans offer you a set of call and data services at the plan cost. Unless you choose an unlimited plan, service usage that exceeds your allocation results in additional costs.

You pay your bill after you have used the service and will sign a contract committing to your service provider for a fixed term. If you decide to switch providers, there will be cancellation fees. Weigh this disadvantage against the additional perks your postpaid service includes.

How to Get the Best Cell Phone Deals in Ontario

Hoping to get lower pricing on standard plans? Look out for special offers and promotions but do read terms and conditions carefully. Check the contract period you may be committing to against the duration of the offer.

You may find that buying online qualifies you for reduced connection costs. For example, Koodo charges a $60 connection fee, which is waived if you shop online.

Plans from “flanker” brands, often smaller reseller brands purchased by big providers, are generally cheaper than those of the flagship brand.

They offer the same performance at a lower cost. For example, Koodo is a Telus brand, and Virgin is a Bell brand.

Tomas, the founder and editor-in-chief of NetSpeed Canada, moved to Vancouver, BC over 10 years ago and was shocked by the high cost of home internet plans. As a problem solver, he researched alternatives and discovered that Canada has many lesser-known internet providers beyond the Big 3. This led to the creation of NetSpeed Canada, a platform where Canadians can enter their address and view all available internet plans.
