When it comes to transparent policies and pricing, you have to like Oxio. The company is open about its business model which relies on retaining subscribers for over two years before Oxio profits. 

With customer retention high on its priority list, Oxio’s customer service is a cut above many of its competitors. 

Add to that the advantage of a budget-friendly plan like the 100 Mbps offer at $57 per month, and it’s easy to see why we recommend this company. 

However, it does have a downside in the form of its broadband technology which still relies on cable. 

It also remains to be seen whether Oxio will keep up the good work it set out to do. The company was acquired by Cogeco in 2023.

SaskTel is a government-owned entity providing telecommunications services throughout Saskatchawan. As such, its reach is excellent, and it has been developing its Fibre to the Home (FTTH) network since 2012. 

Although customer service is not always ideal, the overwhelming consensus is that SaskTel provides acceptable service, at least, in urban areas. There’s also a sense of pride and ownership in supporting a local, crown-owned organisation.

While some users admit that they don’t really need such fast speeds, SaskTel’s infiNET 1 GB plan with 1000 Mbps download speeds and 500 Mbps upload speeds at $104.95 per month seems to be the most popular choice.

Opinions on Rogers are polarised, with some users saying the network is highly reliable, while others report bad customer service experiences and long waits for technicians when things go wrong. Love it or hate it, Rogers is the only fibre alternative to SaskTel in Saskatoon at present. 

Its Ignite Internet Gigabit 1,000 Mbps plan has upload speeds of 150 Mbps, indicating a Fibre to the Node (FttN) connection rather than “pure” FTTH. The cost is $130 per month or, if you take a 24-month contract, $110 per month.

To sum up, Rogers offers the advantage of an established, powerful provider and reliable infrastructure. The reported downsides are comparatively high pricing, difficulty remedying billing errors, and lengthy waits for customer service.

Using 100 Mbps as a benchmark for price comparison, TekSavvy has the edge as the cheapest provider you can turn to. It uses Shaw’s network and its 100 Mbps Unlimited plan at $45.95 monthly is a fraction cheaper than Oxio’s. 

At the same time, there are reasons to be concerned about TekSavvy. Users are reporting unstable connections, and there are reports that the company has lost upwards of 100,000 customers. 

The independent reseller says it has no plans to sell its business just yet, but is keeping its options open.

TekSavvy currently provides DSL and cable connections, but has hopes of gaining access to fibre reselling rights following its appeal to the CRTC.

VMedia is a solid option for Saskatoon internet users, most of whom report relatively reliable internet speeds. Pricing is also favourable. A 1,000 Mbps cable-based plan costs $89.95 monthly. 

There’s no 100 Mbps plan, but VMedia’s 150 Mbps plan currently costs $68 per month.  However, do be aware that the technology is cable, so upload speeds are slow across the board.  

Reviews are somewhat mixed, with customer service bearing the brunt of most of the dissatisfaction while satisfied customers say that speeds are consistent and reliable. 

Part of the customer service issue may be attributed to VMedia’s position as a reseller.

This means that they aren’t always in control of all technical issues and must escalate them to the real owners of the infrastructure. In Saskatoon, that’s likely to be Rogers.
