Cheapest Cell Phone Plans in Quebec

On the surface, it’s a straightforward question with an easy answer. But nothing is as simple as it seems.

For example, some people might be perfectly happy with a no data plan while others want great value with data and a few perks.

So, instead of just looking at a single plan, we need to delve into several plans, each of which caters to different needs.

To begin the discussion, we’ll sum up our selections before taking a deeper dive that clarifies who will benefit most from each option.

Our Take

As the cheapest plan worth considering, we’re looking at the Fizz 6 GB plan at $26 per month. Here’s our take on it.

Pros
  • Despite its low cost, the Fizz 6 GB plan still offers unlimited talk time.
  • Fizz uses infrastructure from the big players, so coverage and reliability are good.
  • Unused data rolls over for up to two months.
Cons
  • The data allowance isn’t particularly exciting. Choose this plan if you’re usually on WiFi networks.
  • Fizz uses 4G networks – not a major drawback, but worth remembering.

Our Take

For great value, we like Koodo’s 25 GB plan at $27. Compared to the plan from Fizz, Koodo offers that extra data you need when you’re out and about for only one dollar more.

Pros
  • An attractive amount of data and unlimited talk time.
  • Reliable network access and good coverage using the Telus network.
  • Referral benefits offering reduced costs for 5 months.
Cons
  • To qualify for the 25 GB, you sign up for 24 months of automatic top ups.
  • If you prefer to top up manually, you’ll “only” get 20 GB of data.
  • As with most low-cost plans, you’ll get 4G network access.

Our Take

For no frills plans that just give you the basics, your top choice will be Lucky Mobile’s Lucky 4 GB plan at $22 per month.

Pros
  • Save a few dollars a month for unlimited talktime and 4 GB data.
  • Bonus data if you register for automatic top up.
  • Good coverage using the Bell 4G network.
Cons
  • It’s no frills: customer service isn’t really a feature.
  • Occasional technical glitches. Most recently, difficulty topping up.
  • Reportedly, slower than expected network speed.

Our Take

No data plans offer savings for those who are happy to use WiFi most of the time. If that sounds good to you, the entry-level Telus Nationwide Talk & Text 15 plan at $15 could be a top choice.

Pros
  • Telus offers 5G network access: a bonus if you’re happy to buy a little data.
  • The Telus network is among the big three for network coverage throughout Canada.
  • No contracts.
Cons
  • There’s a 100 minute cap on talktime.
  • There is no data included.

Methodology

NetspeedCanada has no affiliations with any mobile phone provider. We use advanced data aggregation and our proprietary database to compare cell phone plans with user priorities in mind.

Our conclusions are based on pricing, data allocation, network capabilities and coverage, and any limitations or advantages inherent in the plans we analyse. At the same time, we access public forums to examine questions like service reliability and customer service track record.

Limitations exist. While every attempt to cover your cell phone plan selection criteria has been made, we advise you to conduct your own research using our online tool.

Before committing to your selection, be sure to confirm questions like coverage with your shortlisted providers – especially if you live in, or frequently visit, remote areas.

Cell Phone Carrier Network Coverage in Quebec

With a bewildering array of brands offering cheap cell phone plans in Quebec, you can be pardoned for wondering what their coverage is like.

Interestingly, most of the network infrastructure is owned by the “big three:” Bell, Telus, and Rogers. They also own most of the lower-cost brands out there and use their networks to provide coverage.

Fizz, owned by Quebecor, is the only exception we’ve covered here. It uses the big three’s infrastructure, and some users report better coverage since it accesses all the strongest networks instead of relying on one.

Whichever plan you’re considering, always check coverage – especially if you often use your phone from remote locations.

What is the Difference Between Prepaid and Postpaid Plans?

You may have noticed that all the cheapest cell phone plans in Quebec are prepaid.

Since you’re paying for service before you use it, there’s no need for your carrier to engage in credit checks, billing and debt collection. You pay in advance, and qualify for cheaper rates than the postpaid clients.

There is a downside to prepaid plans, however. If you run out of data, you have to buy more. If you don’t use it, you often lose it. That’s why we like Fizz. It lets your data roll over, so you’re more likely to benefit from any extra data you pay for.

Furthermore, most prepaid budget plans, with the exception of the no-data plan from Telus, offer 4G only.

Is Unlimited Data Really Unlimited?

Low data caps are among the reasons why some people won’t find the low-cost plans we’ve featured here attractive. Moving to the other end of the spectrum, you can choose Unlimited Data plans. But is that data really unlimited?

It’s a “yes and no” answer. Yes, you can use as much data as you want with no extra charge. However, these plans choke your speeds after you’ve used a set amount of data.

For example, choosing Bell’s Ultimate 100 Postpaid plan at $60 means your speeds are going to throttle back after you’ve used 100 GB of data.

This led to the creation of NetSpeed Canada, a platform where Canadians can enter their address and view all available internet plans.
